Lambert Receives The Jefferson Award for State of Florida
WESH 2 awarded five coveted Jefferson Awards for Community Service during a banquet at Universal Orlando, which was held to honor outstanding local volunteers. The NBC affiliate has sponsored the Central Florida area’s Jefferson Awards – a national recognition program often called “The Nobel Prize of Public Service” – for 16 consecutive years.
Throughout the year, WESH 2 News broadcasts weekly reports entitled “Jefferson Awards Hometown Heroes” which highlight local volunteers who work to make Central Florida a better place to live. At the annual banquet, five silver-medal award winners were honored from the pool of 52 candidates. One award recipient is then chosen to travel to Washington D.C., to take part in the national Jefferson Awards volunteer recognition program. This year’s Central Florida winner of the Jefferson Award for the state of Florida and candidate for the national award is Gary Lambert.
Gary uses his special talents to improve the self-esteem of Central Floridians struggling with cancer, drug dependency, homelessness, and AIDS. In addition to coordinating endless fund-raising events on their behalf, Gary has provided countless free haircuts to these individuals. He was also a founding member of the American Cancer Society’s “Look Good, Feel Better” program, and volunteers countless hours hosting groups of women in various stages of cancer treatment. Gary makes time for one-on-one meetings in his salon with these cancer patients and provides wig styling and haircuts to these special clients at no charges. In addition, Gary is a big supporter of Lisa Merlin Home for women.
